Our Environment

We are Canada’s leading integrated freight and parcel solutions provider. We have an extensive transportation network and supporting infrastructure. So while we provide a highly needed business service, we do acknowledge that our most significant impact to the environment is our air emissions as a result of the services we provide.

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and have an established Environmental policy.  We have also been actively engaged at different levels of our business to help improve our efficiency and reduce our environmental footprint.

 

 

Greenhouse Gas Reporting

We have been conducting an annual greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory since 2007.

  • Our reporting tool was developed based on the globally-recognized GHG Protocol Corporate Standard supported by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WRI/WBCSD).
  • Currently, Purolator's carbon footprint reporting is composed of Scope 1 (fleet fuel, facility heating), Scope 2 (facility electricity) and Scope 3 (contractor fuel, waste, travel) emissions.
  • We have developed the capability to provide customers with a Carbon Footprint Report that quantifies the emissions related to their specific shipments. This helps customers better understand their carbon footprint and identify ways to minimize their environmental impact.

Fleet Efficiency

We have the largest hybrid electric vehicle fleet of any freight and parcel solutions provider in North America.

  • We operate over 559 hybrid electric delivery vehicles in Canada (as of July 2015).
  • Our non-revenue fleet consists of 126 hybrid cars.
  • Our HEV Fleet has logged 48.8 million kilometres to date, and we have prevented the emission of 1,625 tonnes of GHG emissions and saved 688,459 litres of fuel since introducing hybrid electric vehicles in 2005
  • All new heavy equipment is specified with Ecoflaps (perforated mudflaps) to assist in improving on-highway fuel efficiency through less drag on the vehicle.
  • All new class 8 highway tractors are specified with automated manual transmissions to assist in improving fuel efficiency and reduce driver fatigue.
  • We have eliminated 10,600 tonnes of GHGs annually, using sophisticated modeling software to redesign our ground network in Eastern and Western Canada.
  • Over 3200 Geotab installed on our fleet of trucks which provides Fleet Maintenance with Critical Maintenance Notifications which may affect the truck fuel performance and potential breakdowns
  • Our corporate, sales and management car fleet is now 83 % HEV- or diesel-powered to help reduce carbon footprint and reduce fuel consumption.
  • We utilize a new electric vehicle charging station at our head office parking lot in Mississauga, Ontario as well as at our Montreal Hub; There is a plan to increase the amount of electric vehicle charging stations for facilities across Canada over the next few years.

Eco-driving Practices

We train our drivers on eco-driving practices.

  • No idling policy requires drivers to turn off their vehicles when they stop for a delivery, never idling at the curb or in a driveway, which contributes to reductions in fuel use and emissions.
  • We provide training in progressive shifting to save fuel.
  • Our tractor software tracks and rewards driver habits to maintain optimum speed limits and limit excessive idling.
  • We have seen a 4 per cent improvement in idle-time since the introduction of Geotab in 2014

Energy Efficiency

With 241 facilities nationwide, we are trying new and innovative ways to reduce our energy consumption.

  • We have reduced our energy consumption on average by 22 percent at 60 of our 241 facilities nationwide by retrofitting the lighting systems.
    • Includes the over 170,000 square foot Ontario Hub, which alone will help us reduce about 155.6 tonnes of GHG emissions per year.
    • The overall lighting retrofit project has reduced electricity usage by more than 7 million kWh annually and 1,300 tonnes of GHG emissions.
    • We will see lower maintenance costs and improved maintainability of the lighting system; improved lighting levels and aesthetics, as well as improved health and safety of teammates, while continuing to meet or exceed the Canadian Occupancy Safety Health Regulations (COSHR) standards.
  • We have reduced our natural gas consumption by 10 per cent over one year through piloting the installation of a destratification fan at one of our major facilities. An additional five facilities in Ontario have had these fans installed, with five more planned in Québec.

Product Packaging and Labelling

On average, we handle one million pieces a day through our network, so we try to offer environmentally friendly packaging options.

  • Customers are offered environmentally friendly packaging options such as:
    • Purolator Express® Envelope – FSC certified, made from 50 per cent recycled fibres, including 35 per cent post-consumer fibres and recyclable in virtually all recycling programs.
    • Purolator Express® Box – Made from 75 per cent post-consumer fibres, fully recyclable.
    • Cardboard and boxboard packaging – Made from up to 95 per cent recycled fibres, 80 per cent post-consumer content (sold in retail locations).
    • Reducing the size of our Purolator Express® Pack and mail bags decreased annual plastic usage by over 195,000 kg.
  • Eliminated carbon paper from our domestic manual bills of lading in 2009. Carbonless paper is an environmentally friendly alternative to carbon paper, reducing paper waste and the energy required to produce carbon black. This environmental initiative resulted in more than 22 tonnes of GHG savings annually.
  • 80 per cent of SKUs for paper products, such as mailing envelopes, are FSC certified and contain at least 60 per cent recycled content.

Environmental Responsibilities

We understand the need to meet regulatory requirements and ensure environmental compliance.

  • We maintain an environmental management system to develop employee knowledge and understanding of environmental issues related to employment functions.
  • Environmental criteria are included as part of Environment, Health and Safety internal and third party audits.
  • We conduct annual regulatory inspections of all our facilities to ensure that we are compliant with all applicable environmental regulations (e.g. leak testing of storage tank systems).

Innovation

We keep ahead of the curve by exploring technology that contributes to a sustainable future.

  • We introduced the Quicksider prototype – the first fully electric delivery truck in the courier industry. Developed with Unicell Limited, it has been tested and evaluated for performance on the streets of Toronto, reducing up to 85 per cent of GHG emissions compared to conventional curbside delivery trucks.
  • We will be the only Canadian courier company to be involved in the evaluation of the world’s first commercially available hydraulic hybrid parcel delivery truck, which is estimated to save 40 per cent in fuel consumption.
  • Energy-saving, passive solar heating technologies are being evaluated as retrofit projects at five facilities.
