The number of Canadians who rely on their local food banks is staggering. In Toronto, visits to the Daily Bread Food Bank saw a 67 per cent increase in August and if current usage continue, it is expected that Toronto food banks will see 1.4 million visits by the end of the year.
Every year, our local teams run events at our terminals to raise food and funds to help others facing food insecurity. Grassroots events like car washes, baseball tournaments and fun employee challenges are all spearheaded by our front-line team members, to make a meaningful difference to those in need in our community.
“Since starting our Purolator Tackle Hunger journey in 2003, we’ve delivered more than 17 million pounds of food that benefit Daily Bread and other food banks across the country,” says Cindy Bailey, Director and Head of Corporate Sustainability. “We’re continuing to work with national and local food banks to make a positive difference for our communities and families across the country.”
In Toronto, we’ve partnered again with the Daily Bread Food Bank for their Thanksgiving fall drive and our team of volunteers will be delivering 15,000 red bags throughout downtown to collect well-needed non-perishable food items.
Recent regional drives to address food insecurity across the country have included:
- Calgary food drive in which Purolator supplied four tractor trailers collecting 522,672 pounds of food.
- Red Bag campaign, in support of Community Care of West Niagara collected, sorted and delivered close to 20,000 pounds of food.
