Purolator introduces first commercial Hybrid Electric Vehicle fleet to Newfoundland

25 per cent of Purolator’s Newfoundland & Labrador fleet is now HEV trucks Canada’s largest logistics company continues to lead the industry towards green alternatives

St. John’s, NL, March 2, 2012 – Purolator is proud to announce the introduction of five HEV trucks to its Newfoundland & Labrador fleet, after a successful beta test for the province’s distinct climate and terrain. Like a true Canadian, Purolator is committed to contributing to the well-being of communities where its teammates live, work, and play, including protecting and preserving the Canadian environment.

Home to the oldest city and settlement in North America, Newfoundland and Labrador has a spectacular natural beauty. With over 40 years of history operating and investing in Atlantic Canada, Purolator considers itself to be an important part of the community and is proud to do its part to help preserve that beautiful landscape.

“As a Canadian company, we believe that being a part of this community means more than providing Atlantic Canadians with reliable and superior service,” says Tom Schmitt, President and CEO, Purolator, Inc. “It also means being committed to environmentally responsible business practices – and demonstrating that commitment in a meaningful way.”

Purolator operates the largest fleet of HEVs of any freight and parcel solutions provider in North America, with 586 HEVs across Canada. The addition of HEVs to the Newfoundland & Labrador fleet is part of Purolator’s ongoing roll-out of HEVs in the Atlantic region and across Canada. In 2010, Purolator converted the entire fleet servicing the City of Halifax to 100 per cent hybrid electric.

When compared to regular curbside delivery vehicles, HEVs reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 40 per cent. By replacing conventional curbside delivery vehicles with HEVs, Purolator has reduced more than 3,355 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and 1,400,000 litres of fuel, to date.

In addition to its HEV fleet, Purolator has a strict no-idling policy for its drivers, a route optimization program that reduces overall distances travelled by vehicles, and environmentally responsible packaging.

Purolator is well established in Newfoundland & Labrador with facilities in Clarenville, Grand Falls, Cornerbrook, Labrador City, Goosebay and two in St. John’s. Most recently, Purolator opened a new facility in Gander. As a long-time employer, reliable business partner and active community member in Atlantic Canada, Purolator is committed to the region and growing along with it.
