Purolator’s truck donation will help Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society bring fresh produce to those with limited access

Vancouver, B.C., Oct. 14, 2014 – Purolator, Canada’s leading freight, parcel and logistics solution provider, today donated a refurbished curbside delivery vehicle to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society – a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower people to nourish themselves by providing access to healthy food, education and training. This donation will help the food bank increase the capacity of its Curbside Fresh Market, which provides affordable local produce to areas of Vancouver with limited access to fresh food.

This initiative is an extension of the Purolator Tackle Hunger® program, which, since its inception in 2003, has helped deliver the equivalent of more than 175,000 pounds of food to local food banks in B.C.

“Purolator is happy to continue our support of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society through our truck donation. We appreciate the need for the food bank’s services and the value these services bring to the Vancouver area,” said Patrick Nangle, President and Chief Executive Officer, Purolator. “We work every year to support hunger-related initiatives such as the Curbside Fresh Market, and our employees are very proud to help bring healthy food to more local communities.”

Currently 28,000 people rely on the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society for support each week. Through the food bank’s Curbside Fresh Market, the organization is better able to reach individuals and families with limited access to fresh food. By focusing on simple ingredients and local food sources, the food bank is also helping to stabilize the consistently increasing need witnessed year after year.

“We are thrilled to welcome the addition of a new vehicle to the Curbside Fresh Market,” said Aart Schuurman Hess, CEO, Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. “This represents another important step toward our goals of increasing access to affordable fresh produce and working with our partners to improve the overall health of our community. We are grateful to Purolator for their generous contribution and efforts toward helping address the growing challenge of food insecurity.”

Hunger is an important issue that affects individuals and families locally in Vancouver, as well as across the country. Currently 26 per cent of those receiving support from the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society are children, and 18 per cent are senior citizens.
