Canadian Association of Food Banks and Purolator Team Up to Drive Away Hunger

And Purolator Tackles Hunger with the Canadian Football League

June 16, 2003, TORONTO, ON

Today, the Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB) and Purolator announced a long-term relationship that will support Canada's National Food Sharing System. The initiative is designed to revolutionize the distribution and delivery of food across Canada to help take more food, more efficiently to more local community destinations.

As part of this relationship, Purolator will help the CAFB improve inventory and transportation systems by implementing the first Canadian network-wide food inventory system and centralized tracking system. This relationship marks the first Canadian process for donating transportation to support local food banks in developing their relief fleet. The relationship also extends to involve other organizations, such as the Canadian Football League (CFL), in the collection of non-perishable items for food banks across the country.

"Every day in Canada, a city the size of Ottawa lines up for food," said Charles Seiden, Executive Director, CAFB. "With the help of Purolator's distribution, we will now be able to ship food from our central warehouse out to more than 250 communities across Canada. In this way, Purolator's expert district and local logistics support will enable us to more effectively support our member organizations in their efforts to feed thousands of hungry Canadians."

Purolator's fleet of more than 3,000 vehicles will be leveraged in the CAFB's outreach to over 250 member food banks across Canada. Purolator will also assist the CAFB by helping to track large food donations, identify ways to help food banks replace or add to their vehicles, and educate the public about the extent of hunger in Canada.

"Hunger is a very fundamental and pressing issue that affects all the communities that we serve, work and live in. We know that hunger in Canada deserves our increased attention and action," said Purolator President and CEO, Bob Johnson. "This is why Purolator is taking a new corporate direction towards charitable giving and is now focusing its resources on a single national cause: alleviating hunger together with the CAFB. With our national resources of more than 12,500 employees and our ability to reach almost every destination point in Canada, we know we can help make a tangible and immediate difference to this issue."

Purolator Tackles Hunger with the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the CAFB

The Purolator Drive Away Hunger campaign for the CAFB kicks off immediately as Purolator and the CFL announce the Purolator Tackle Hunger program, a food drive campaign designed to directly address the issue of hunger in Canada and to benefit the CAFB.

Beginning in August, Purolator will launch their in-stadium support of the CAFB, by managing the first Tackle Hunger food drive and will ask game fans to drop off non-perishable food items at the game. Tackle Hunger food drives will extend across Canada throughout the season at various CFL games. Purolator staff will be on site to run the food drives. The food will then be distributed by the CAFB to local food banks in each region and to community member food banks across Canada. The Grey Cup will be on-site at each of the Tackle Hunger food drive games to help generate additional donations.

Tackle Hunger food drives scheduled for the 2003 regular season games will be announced soon.

In addition to the Tackle Hunger food drives, every time a CFL Quarterback gets sacked throughout the regular season, Purolator will donate the Quarterback's weight in food to a CFL hometown region food bank. TSN will broadcast a running sack tally and the quantity of food donated by Purolator during each of the CFL games broadcast on their station. TSN will also support the program by running promotional commercials throughout all 50 CFL broadcasted games.

"We're thrilled to join forces with the CFL in the tackle hunger campaign. The CFL's exposure and presence in communities across our country allows this campaign to reach Canadians in multiple cities throughout the summer and fall," said Robert Swanborough, Vice-President of Marketing at Purolator. "We want to increase awareness about hunger in Canada, help increase food donations in each community and help get food out to the people who need it. We know that through Tackle Hunger, Canadians will now have a new opportunity to help fellow citizens in need of a nutritious meal."
