Manufacturer ID Now Required for US Textile and Apparel Imports
On October 5, 2005 the Treasury Department and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) published in the Federal Register, new interim regulations relating to the country of origin of textile and apparel products.
The regulations state that, effective October 5, 2005, textile declarations are no longer required for the importation of textile and apparel products. However, all entries of textiles and apparel products must now identify the manufacturer of such products through a manufacturer identification code (MID) constructed from the name and address of the entity performing the origin-conferring operations.
If an entry filed for such merchandise fails to include the MID properly constructed from the name and address of the manufacturer, the port director may reject the entry or take other action.
In order to enter your textile and apparel product, the name and address of the manufacturer should be included with your shipping documents. Note that the address provided should be consistent with the country of origin of the merchandise. Shipments of multiple textile/apparel items will require manufacturer information for each item.
