Brazil Tax ID number required for all nondocument shipments
- Effective Aug. 22, 2005, all nondocument shipments going to Brazil will require a Brazil Tax ID number:
Shipments addressed to a company require the recipient company's Brazil Tax ID number (known as CNPJ).
- Shipments addressed to an individual require the individual's Brazil Tax ID number (known as CPF).
If the recipient is a non-Brazilian resident, then the individual's passport number is required and it will be used as the tax ID number for clearance purposes. To avoid customs delays, all express companies are required to present a valid Brazil Tax ID number or a passport number to Brazilian Customs. If a shipment is missing the Brazil Tax ID number or passport number on the air waybill, it will be held by customs.
Please note: A return policy for nondocument shipments missing the Brazil Tax ID number has not yet been determined by Brazilian Customs.
